Adonis (アドニス, Adonisu?) is the main protagonist of The Kingdoms of Ruin series.
Personality[]
Initially before the Witch Hunt, Adonis lived together with Chloe who had found him living in the streets. Adonis lived in harmony with Chloe, until the Witch Hunt began which forced them to move out between places to places. Having been raised and taught by her, Adonis grew attached. Yet still, early on before her execution, Adonis expressed the thought of destroying all those humans with magic so they could live together peacefully.[1]
However, their conversation was cut short and were captured due to Adonis' persistence, he was being held hostage, which led to Chloe's tragedy. Once Chloe was executed, Adonis' view on humans was torn apart. Blind with rage, grief, and hatred, Adonis swore to wipe out humanity to avenge his master.[2] His life was spared, and in all those ten years before he was released by Doroka, he had carefully planned out and determined a way to precisely eliminate an entire nation. His plot for revenge does not extent to those who witnessed the execution of Chloe only, even those who did not and those who are prisoners aren't spared, and if a witch dares to step on his way, then he wouldn't object to murder them either.[3]
Doroka, the one who had freed him from prison however, is a special case. Even in the face of an enraged Adonis she remained calm, and eventually after Doroka stated that they could bring back Chloe, Adonis broke down in tears. Seeing a glimpse of hope once again, it was all then taken away from him after Eekhout had shot and killed Doroka, enraging Adonis even further. After a military member of the Redia Empire said that they should've killed Adonis with his master long ago, Adonis agreed; wishing that they did kill him. [4]
However, after getting the chance to revive Chloe; he instead revives Doroka, because he would not allow Chloe, his beloved adoptive mother, to be revived to be used by witches and hunted by humans. By this decision, Ophelia Clementine was particularly enraged. When Doroka used her magic to completely stop Yamato among others who invaded the Witch's last kingdom, Adonis found her ability useful and offered her to work with him. When she doesn't want to, Adonis proceeds to go on and go on a rampage which brought distraught upon Doroka as she can't do anything. However, after the events of the final massacre of the Witches, Adonis' heart began to soften.[5]
During the battle against Shirousagi, Adonis' focus was completely onto protecting Doroka, something Shirousagi used against fully into his advantage. After Doroka had been blinded, Adonis felt incredibly useless and got frustrated. Once the tide turned, Adonis used Absolute Zero, Chloe's technique that she taught to Adonis for use when protecting someone important, to which Adonis did.[6][7]
Unbeknownst to Adonis, Doroka had secretly used her love spell against him. Once Doroka told him about this and apologized, Adonis shrugged it off stating that he had told her to use it against him.[8] However, Adonis had a mental breakdown when thinking about why he was getting so close to Doroka in the first place, coping with Chloe's death and begrudgingly believes that his hands are good for the sake of revenge, and learning that if they have the love magic, then they won't have any enemies; which is why he found her to be so important.[9] The most likely case of mental breakdowns Adonis has is likely him being in denial.
His kind and protective side eventually began to grow clearer and clearer, with Adonis later sacrificing one of his eye so that Doroka could regain her vision; expressing that he should've done so sooner.[10]
Appearance[]
Adonis is a young man of average height with a slim, yet muscular build. He has a messy black hair and bangs sometimes covering his eyes, along with thick eyebrows and eyelashes with red pupils and sharp facial features. After being rescued by Punch and his gang, Adonis wore a white t-shirt under a green jacket with its sleeves folded upwards and a matching green dress pants, tightened up with two sets of brown belts along with a pair of white boots.[11] He also dons a beige cloak along with two sets of goggles, only used when riding a motorcycle and to withstand dust getting in his eyes while traveling through the Wastelands.[12][13]
Later, in order to allow Doroka to have vision again, he used his magic to remove his right eye and donated it to her
History[]
Initially living as a starving, homeless kid, Adonis lived in deep poverty until the Witch Chloe Morgan found him. Taking him as an apprentice, Adonis and Chloe lived together as not only teacher and student, but also son and mother; forming a loving family relationship.[14] However until then, the Witch Hunt was announced and both Adonis and Chloe had to go into hiding, traveling from one place and another. In one instance, they were found in an abandoned home and while Chloe takes a bath, she cries as she thanks Adonis for always staying by her side.[15]
However in one fateful day amongst the Solsavian Region within the Redia Imperial Territory, they were ambushed by Redian soldiers who spotted them. Wanting to protect Chloe using his Summoning Magic, Adonis volunteers; yet Chloe objects and later handled the soldiers all by herself. Upset and felt useless, Adonis expressed that he wanted to protect Chloe and that he loves her, but before he could finish his sentence Chloe rushes in to hug him and telling Adonis that so does she.
Until then they were teleported with a mechanism developed by Redia to the capital of the Redia Empire where a ceremony is being held. With his reckless behavior, Adonis told Chloe to run and rushes in to deal with the guards only for him to be captured and held hostage. Angered, Chloe stated that she had only allowed them to live and had wished to not fight mankind so that Adonis could find peace. However while performing Absolute Zero, her magic was destroyed by SDAM-2, a device which suppresses magic.[16]
When Adonis was ordered to be put down by Goethe, Chloe begs for Goethe to spare the boy's life as he is human just like the rest of them, and that she will do anything for him to survive. Begging on her knees, Chloe was later humiliated, before being executed brutally with a firing squad in front of Adonis; who had watched the execution as he screams at the top of his lung before being enraged. Chloe's wishes were brought upon, and Adonis' life was spared; yet, he was put into max captivity in Mayhem Prison and labeled a threat of Level SS.[17]
Over the course of the next ten years, Adonis would use those years wisely, spending all the time to envision the perfect means of slaughter with a simulation without end.[18]However, he would not be able to put this plan into action until he was released by Doroka ten years later.

- Chloe Morgan: Ever since Chloe made Adonis, who was initially living in poverty, as not only an apprentice, but also a son; Adonis had never forgotten Chloe's action. Adonis had always been on Chloe's side, willing to guard her while she does whatever. However, when dealing with Redian pursuers; it was always Chloe who had taken care of them swiftly and effectively, which made Adonis eventually mad during one of their last conversations with each other. While also wanting to test out his combat prowess, he also wanted to protect Chloe. During his complaint towards Chloe, Adonis knew that it is because he's a human like them that she won't let him fight his kind, simply because she is too kind to do so. Because of Chloe insisting that he's too inexperienced, Adonis felt worthless. Eventually Chloe was able to calm him down before their conversation was put at a stop when they were teleported to the capital of Redia.
Upon seeing Adonis being ordered to be "put down," Chloe begs for Goethe to spare Adonis' life; stating that she had kidnapped and enslaved him as Adonis cries and wonders what she is talking about. In her final moments before being executed, Chloe sacrifices her life for Adonis and thanks Adonis before being shot and beheaded. This event was what led to Adonis' burning hatred towards mankind and his motivation to erase humans from the face of the earth.[19] Even when he had the chance to bring Chloe back to life, he refuses to do so as she's simply too kind for the world, and that the world doesn't deserve her. Adonis cannot allow Chloe to experience the horrors of the world again; apologizing to her as he stated that he loves her too much for him to be able to bring her back. before then Doroka was revived in place of Chloe, Adonis sees a flashback of Chloe's memory, where she thanks him for always being there for her.[20]
- Doroka: Adonis thought nothing of Doroka when he first met her, other than the fact that she freed him so he spared her. Until Doroka's interference and when she informs Adonis that she's a Witch and there are many other Witches that are still alive Adonis was angered. Doroka managed to calm him down and tells him that there's a way to revive Chloe, which Adonis, for a long time, saw a glimpse of hope. However, Doroka was shot by Eekhout and Adonis was enraged.[21] When Adonis was brought to Lunamilia by the Witches in hopes of reviving the Ice Witch Chloe to use her as a way to wipe out humanity, Adonis instead brought back Doroka as a way to return the debt back to Anna and Doroka, and also believing that Chloe is too kind for the world.[22]
While fighting Yamato, Doroka used her Love Magic against the Redia Battalions which completely paralyzed them; Adonis found her ability to be useful and after finishing off Yamato and the rest, forced her to return to earth with him; leaving behind the surviving Witches on the moon.[23][24] While Doroka believes that there is good within Adonis' heart still, Adonis is conflicted about the feeling that he's actually getting closer and closer to her. In denial, Adonis shrugs it off as that he simply found her ability to be useful; that's why she needs to stay alive.[25] After Doroka's eyes were destroyed by Shirousagi, Adonis promised to her that he would heal her eyes. Eventually after countless attempts at doing so, Adonis decided to give Doroka one of his eyes; implanting it to her so that she could finally regain her vision.[26] Eventually after that, Adonis and Doroka would get more and more cooperative with each other, even if their ideals are the complete opposite of one and another; with Doroka wanting peace, and Adonis hellbent on revenge.
- Punch: While traveling with Chloe through the Wastelands, Adonis came across a man on the brink of death. In her kindness, Chloe gave Punch a bottle of water; a deed he won't ever forget.[27] Eventually, they part ways. After the massacre on the moon, Adonis and Doroka was transported back to earth in the middle of the Wastelands; where they were found by Punch and his gang, who rescued them back to safety and tended their injuries.[28][29] While Punch had not forgotten about what Chloe and Adonis did, Adonis forgot about who Punch was; however Punch does not try and remind him of who he was.
In the face of Adonis' stoic and edgy demeanor, Punch remains calm and cool; understanding what he went through and eventually when Adonis left, convinced Doroka to go after him; stating that whether revenge is good or bad, there's no way to settle it. As Punch watches Doroka catch up to Adonis, Punch smiles and tells Adonis to not make a woman cry.[30]
Enemies[]
- Emperor Goethe: After witnessing how Chloe was executed, Adonis was enraged by Goethe's actions; plotting revenge and wanting him to die by his own hands. When awakened after ten years of captivity, Adonis' main target was Goethe until the invasion was put to a stop by Doroka's intervention.[31][32] Adonis harbors nothing but a burning hatred towards Goethe for his actions, wishing for him to suffer an excruciating pain. However, upon learning that Goethe died by an illness, Adonis was enraged and tries to cope with the situation he's currently in; how he wasn't able to kill Goethe. Adonis' anger caused Telmon's ship going haywire, eventually he was able to calm down through Doroka.[33]
- Lady Dorothea Grethe: Dorothea's mysterious obsession towards Adonis is the complete opposite of Adonis' hatred towards her. When Shirousagi blinded Doroka, Adonis was enraged and he promised Shirousagi that he would kill Dorothea the same way as he does Shirousagi.[34] Upon learning that the Queen of Redia took place as monarch after the death of Goethe, Adonis made sure to remember the real name of Andromeda after hearing it from Telmon.[35]
- Director Shirousagi: Upon meeting Shirousagi, Adonis thought nothing of him; underestimating him completely. Adonis quickly realizes how dangerous the situation was when they finally fought; seeing him be immune to the love magic and being able to dodge Gaíne.[36] Until then, in the middle of the struggle in which Shirousagi blinds Doroka Adonis gets enraged at him for his actions, threatening him and the Queen he's so loyal to.[37]
However, due to Adonis' brashness, Adonis were at first quickly defeated before Doroka uses her love magic on him, that's when the tide turns, and when Shirousagi sees that he's completely overpowered; he begged Adonis to spare his life.[38][39] Adonis didn't, and instead uses Absolute Zero on him; killing Shirousagi. During his last moments, Shirousagi spent his time reminiscing about the past and how Adonis and Doroka were just like Dorothea and "him."[40] Adonis later stated that he was surprised to see a guy as strong as Shirousagi was employed by Redia.[41]
- General Yamato: Upon their confrontation in Lunamilia, both sides underestimated each other, with Yamato calling Adonis and the Witches a rat, and Adonis stating that he had simply invited him to his grave.[42] During their fight, Yamato blamed Adonis for Yuki's serious injury that she needed to be put into a tube because of the hasty activation of SDAM-2. Adonis called Yamato "stubborn," and someone who's going to die before getting pummeled by Yamato who replied back that the one who's going to die is him.[43]
Their relationship is simple an intense hatred against each other, one more than another. Their fight was quickly put into an end by the interference of Doroka who used love magic to paralyze Yamato.[44] Due to Doroka hesitating to kill Yamato, Adonis finished the job and killed Yamato himself, later slicing off a part of his face and using his magic to change his voice similar to Yamato's in order to mock Redia.[45][46]
Powers and Abilities[]
Written-Style Summoning Magic | |
---|---|
Adonis uses Written-Style Summoning Magic; the one and only way for those who aren't witches, to use and utilize magic. It is the practice of understanding, systematizing the mechanisms of magic and converting them into mathematical expression using a special quill to formulate them into spells.[47] It is said to be hard to master, and requires a very skilled teacher in which Adonis had. The Summoning Magic has a wide-variety of abilities, and the potential is limitless. | |
Summoning Style | |
Gaíne:[48] The practice of enlarging specific objects, whatever they maybe. During Adonis' awakening, he utilizes Gaíne to shock the citizens below when Adonis shot a bullet and it transformed/enlarged the projectile by a magnitude of its size. Later used against Shirousagi during their confrontation.[49]
| |
Grande:[52] The practice of summoning a giant robot. The robot's actions will be completely controlled by the user. While the robot is summoned, the user can practice other summoning techniques to further enhance its capabilities and/or overwhelm their opponents with other summoning techniques alongside Grande. First shown when Adonis used it against the civilians, and later the army of Redia, then used against Shirousagi.[53] | |
Bullet Bell:[54] The practice of summoning two giant gatling guns. Unknown if bullets will eventually run out or it goes without. First used alongside Grande, against civilians. An eye for an eye. | |
Cainz:[55] The practice of sending back projectiles sent by someone, right back at them. Can be used against bullets, rockets, against multiple objects thrown by multiple people and afterwards deflecting it right back at them. It was used against soldiers of Redia who opened fire at Adonis, who reflective all bullets fired back at the soldiers. | |
Nostalgic Memories:[56] The practice of recollecting memories of a certain person from the past. It is used in order to resurrect a witch from the dead, as seen when Adonis used it to resurrect Doroka instead of Chloe, after realizing that it wouldn't be fair to bring Chloe back to life, so that she could be used as a weapon against humanity. | |
Fal:[57] The practice of telekinesis; manipulating an object to do whatever without physical interaction between the user and the object. Adonis used it against Yamato; stealing Yamato's gun telekinesis and proceeding to shoot Yamato with his own gun. | |
Caliburn:[58] The practice of summoning a large sword on-top of the enemy, cutting them in half with one fall. First used against Yamato as a last resort, before Doroka saved Adonis from being killed by Yamato. | |
Gleipnir:[59] The practice of summoning physical shadows which appears as a long, and squared tendrils. It is able to wrap around the user, and/or the victim offensively and defensively. First used against the remaining Redian Batallion in Lunamilia after killing Yamato[60], then later against Shirousagi.[61] | |
Armorization Style | |
The Armorization Style enables the user to engage in combat more effectively, often used in dire states when things get serious. With a wide range of styles, the user is able to use the fighting techniques provided by the Quill which allows the user to fight more tactically and precisely. With Armorization Style, Adonis was able to engage in battle with General Yamato more effectively.[62] |
